Investigations are underway against 21
housing societies, said National Accountability Bureau
(NAB) spokesman Brigadier Nasir Mahmood on Monday.
At a press conference at NAB headquarters,
he said that many people had invested money in these housing
societies and these people should not be scammed. He said
the investigation against nine housing societies was in
advanced stage. The societies are: New City Housing Project,
Airport Employees Cooperative Housing Society, Federal
Employees Cooperative Housing Society, Quaid City Housing
Rawalpindi, Railways Employees Cooperative Housing Society,
Rail View Cooperative Housing Society, Al Madina Town
Rawalpindi, Utility Cooperative Housing Society and Bahria
Town.
At the final stage of the investigation,
references will be filed against the societies in light
of legal opinion and with the consent of the NAB chairman,
he said. The spokesman however said, “so far no
evidence of any wrongdoing by Bahria Town has been detected.”
Mr Mahmood said that inquiries (initial
stage of investigation where documents and evidence are
collected prior to the formal investigation) are also
underway against 12 housing societies. They are Lawyers
Cooperative Housing Society, Accounts Group Cooperative
Housing Society, Rasul Town Housing Scheme Pvt Ltd, Askaria
Co-op Housing Society, Ministry of Commerce Employees
Cooperative Housing Society, Gillani Housing Corporation
Pvt Ltd, Aiwan-e-Sadar Housing Society Rawalpindi, Lahore
Chambers of Commerce Cooperative Housing Society, Abad
Cooperative Housing Society, Intelligence Bureau Cooperative
Housing Society, Supreme Court Employees Cooperative Housing
Society and Veterans Cooperative Housing Society.
He said that NAB had recovered Rs 110
billion over the last five years from various institutions
and people involved in corruption. This amount has been
deposited with the government exchequer, he said. He said
NAB has recovered Rs 8 billion from government agency
defaulters, including the PTCL and Capital Development
Authority. He said this amount was been deposited with
the accountant general of Pakistan Revenue.
He said cases are still under trial in
various courts against politicians and ministers. He said
Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao had been granted
bail by the high court and he denied reports of investigations
against the high court judge. He said 176 politicians
are being investigated, including two former prime ministers,
10 former chief ministers, 63 MNAs, 10 senators, 91 MPAs,
586 bureaucrats and 189 businessmen.
